Van Zellers White Port
Van Zellers White Port
The Van Zellers White Port is a fortified wine produced by Van Zellers & Co., a historic winery located in Portugal’s Douro region. Founded in 1780, the winery has been run by the Van Zeller family for 14 generations, dedicated to crafting high-quality wines that reflect the richness and diversity of the Douro.
This wine is made from a blend of over 15 traditional white grape varieties from the Douro, sourced from both old and newer vineyards primarily located in the Cima Corgo subregion, particularly in the Murça district.
Winemaking Process:
The white grapes are foot-trodden before fermentation begins, along with 10% of the total grape brandy added to the final port. This allows for maceration at cooler temperatures over a longer period before fermentation. Once the must is ready, fortification occurs with the remaining brandy added all at once. The wine is aged in old oak barrels for a minimum of two years before bottling.
Tasting Notes:
The result is a creamy and delicately sweet white port, with notes of apricots and floral hints like lilacs and violets, adding complexity to the wine. It is ideal as an aperitif or in long drinks and is best served chilled.
With an alcohol content of 20%, Van Zellers White Port is an elegant expression of Douro’s winemaking traditions, blending traditional techniques with the diversity of the region’s native grape varieties.
