Most Riojas are blends—usually a high proportion of Tempranillo complemented by Garnacha (Grenache), Mazuelo (Carignan), and Graciano (Morrastel). In a rare twist, Lagrimas de Bhilar is all Graciano, which is prized for its complexity, color, aroma, and age-worthiness. Winemaker David Sampedro ferments old-vine Alavesa Graciano with indigenous yeast in concrete vats where it also ages before bottling. Without any wood or other varietals to get in the way, this wine highlights Graciano's profile of red fruit, flowers, spice, and licorice over smooth tannins.
